The Burst of Life in the Távora Valley: Colours and Flavours that Shape Our Wines

May 19th 26

At Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias, biodiversity is more than just a feature of the land – it is the true driving force behind sustainability and the soul of our wines. When spring arrives, this ecosystem comes to life in a celebration of colours and aromas that transforms the Douro landscape.

At this time of year, the estate is at its most splendid. Between the historic walls of the convent and the vineyard slopes, camellias bloom with their classic elegance, whilst poppies paint them a vivid red. This floral explosion is not merely a visual delight; it is the sign of a vibrant ecosystem that welcomes beneficial wildlife and pollinators, ensuring the natural balance our grapes so desperately need.

Our biodiversity also extends to the wealth of fruit trees that dot the estate. Walking through the estate means encountering the citrus scent of orange and lemon trees, the sweetness of figs, and the botanical curiosity of our Actinidia deliciosa (kiwis). Joining these species is the arbutus, with its vibrant fruits, which forms the perfect bridge between the orchard and our natural Mediterranean woodland.

Surrounded by cork oaks, aromatic rockroses, and wild chestnut trees, our vineyards grow in harmony with this resilient vegetation. Beyond its beauty, this ‘green frame’ plays a fundamental technical role:

Conservation and Soil: It helps prevent erosion and retain precious moisture.
Climate and Protection: It moderates the Douro’s temperature extremes and attracts natural predators that protect the vineyard from pests in a biological way.

At Kranemann Wine Estates, we believe that every bottle should reflect not only the grape variety and the soil, but all the life that surrounds it. We protect this biodiversity as an essential part of our sustainable viticulture philosophy, for we know that balanced wines are born only from a nature that is cared for.

Come and discover the wines born where the forest breathes with the vineyard – a place where nature is felt in every toast.
