Grape ID | Tinta Roriz — The Iberian grape variety par excellence

Oct 29th 25

Few grape varieties have as much character and prominence in the Iberian Peninsula as Tinta Roriz, known in other regions as Aragonês (in Portugal) or Tempranillo (in Spain). It is one of the rare varieties that is equally valued on both sides of the border — and in the Douro, it takes on its more Douro-like name: Tinta Roriz.

An early, vigorous, and productive grape variety, it adapts easily to different climates and soils. When its vigour is well controlled, it reveals the best of both worlds: elegance and structure, with abundant red and black fruit — such as cherry, blackberry, and plum — complemented by delicate floral notes and a touch of spice that gives it depth and complexity.

In Quinta do Convento wines, Tinta Roriz is blended with Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, bringing liveliness, freshness, and a balanced aromatic profile, where ripe fruit and floral subtlety combine with the natural intensity of the Douro. It is an early-ripening grape variety, but the wine evolves beautifully over time — gaining texture, finesse, and classic elegance.

Vibrant and expressive, Tinta Roriz is the liquid translation of the Iberian spirit: full of soul, sunshine, and character.
