On October 22nd was Winemaker’s Day and we couldn’t help telling you a little bit more about the amazing Winemaking Team Kranemann Wine Estates has.
The winemaking team is formed by two renowned winemakers who together form a synergetic team deeply dedicated to the Douro terroir: Diogo Lopes and Maria Susete Melo.
Diogo, born in Lisbon but with strong family roots in Beira, has always had a special connection with agriculture. With a degree in Agronomy and training in Oenology, his career has been moulded by diverse experiences in Portuguese and international wine regions, such as Napa Valley (California, United States of America) and Mendoza (Argentina). His partnership with Anselmo Mendes was a milestone in his career, bringing with it the incessant search for the maximum expression of the terroir in the wines he produces. At Kranemann Wine Estates, he embraces the challenge of capturing the essence of the Távora Valley.
Susete, for her part, carries with her a passion for wine that was born from childhood, at the grape harvest on her grandparents' estate. With a degree in Microbiology, followed by a postgraduate qualification in Oenology and Viticulture, she expanded her knowledge through experiences in leading wineries in different European countries, and in South Africa, where she began her PhD. Her return to Portugal culminated in a rich experience in the Douro, where she accepted the challenge of leading viticulture and oenology at Kranemann Wine Estates, with a focus on the terroir of the Távora Valley.
The team formed by Diogo and Susete is a reflection of teamwork, where passion for wine and advanced technical knowledge come together to create high-quality DOC Douro wines and Ports that respect and express the unique character of the terroir of the Quinta do Convento S. Pedro das Águias. The team spirit between the two is palpable, reflected in the complementarity of their experiences and the sharing of a common vision. They share a long-standing friendship and work with smiles on their lips.
