Grape ID | Arinto: freshness, acidity, and versatility

Sep 26th 25

Arinto is one of Portugal's most versatile and oldest white grape varieties, grown from north to south. It is known as Pedernão in the Vinho Verde region and is considered the most important grape in the Bucelas area of the Lisbon Wine Region. Arinto stands out for its vibrant acidity — its hallmark — and remarkable ageing potential.

The bunches are compact, with small, yellowish berries, and what truly distinguishes Arinto is its aromatic and palate signature. It is fruity, offering citrus notes of lemon, lime, green apple, and occasionally pear, accompanied by a distinct mineral trace. Its vibrant acidity lends freshness and liveliness, making the wines direct, tense, and crisp.

Versatile in the winery, it can be vinified in young and refreshing styles or more complex expressions, including sparkling wines and even the so-called' winter whites’, which benefit from greater structure and ageing potential. Arinto can reveal a greater aromatic range, with an elegant and surprising evolution depending on the terroir and time in the bottle.

At Quinta do Convento de S. Pedro das Águias, Arinto is present in our Hasso white, Quinta do Convento, and Quinta do Convento Reserve white wines, bringing freshness and balance to the blend, expressing all its Douro vocation.
