Among the lesser-known white grape varieties of the Douro, Donzelinho White stands out as a true rarity. Ancient — already referenced in the 16th century — and little planted today, it is a variety that survives thanks to producers who recognize its unique character and oenological potential.
Grown mainly in the Douro and Trás-os-Montes regions, it is a variety with small bunches and berries, naturally low-yielding and demanding in the vineyard. It buds early, which makes it sensitive to spring frosts, but it has good resistance to fungal diseases. Its low fertility contributes to reduced yields, but also to wines with greater concentration and identity.
Historically used in blends of White Port Wine, it is now beginning to assert itself in single-varietal versions, revealing a distinct personality. Its aromatic profile is unusual and markedly terpenic, with intense floral notes, hints of honeysuckle, and herbaceous nuances reminiscent of rosemary. There are also subtle citrus and fruity notes, always with great freshness.
On the palate, it has good acidity, a silky texture, and an elegant minerality. It
wins you over with its originality and precision. Its freshness makes it particularly versatile at the table, pairing well with seafood, grilled fish, and dishes where aromatic herbs echo in the glass.
Donzelinho White is one of those grape varieties that defies convention: discreet in presence, striking in memory.
