‘Grapes ID’ new segment : Viosinho - Structure and Elegance in a Douro White

Mar 28th 25

Every month, we will explore a grape variety used in our wines, revealing its characteristics and what makes it unique.

Welcome to Grapes ID, a section where the identity of each grape takes centre stage!

In March, the highlight is Viosinho, one of the Douro's most interesting white grape varieties, known for its ability to produce structured and captivating wines. For a long time, it was not widely planted, but its versatility and quality have been gaining increasing recognition.

With its early ripening and regular productivity, Viosinho adapts well to different soil types and climates, preferring fertile, well-drained soils. It is moderately sensitive to some vine diseases but easy to manage and prune, which makes it easy to grow. Its ability to withstand heat without losing freshness makes it an excellent choice for hot regions, but it also adapts well to cooler climates.

Wines made with Viosinho have a moderate aromatic intensity, with subtle notes of camomile and plum. On the palate, it stands out for its balanced structure, medium acidity, and persistent finish, with a pleasant retro-nasal aroma. Although its acidity is not naturally high, it has an excellent aging capacity, allowing it to develop greater complexity over time.

Apart from our single-varietal wine Ponte do Fumo Rabigato, all our other wines—Hasso, Quinta do Convento, and Quinta do Convento Reserva—are examples of the presence of the Viosinho grape variety in our blends.

Whether on its own or blended with other native grape varieties, Viosinho proves that Douro white wines can be sophisticated, expressive, and memorable. A real treasure to discover!
