Tinta Barroca is one of the most emblematic Portuguese red grape varieties in the Douro. It is prominent in Port wines and, increasingly, single-varietal table wines. It is known for its high yield and good adaptation to the climate.
Although associated with the Douro, it is also found in Lisbon, Setúbal, and the Alentejo region. Outside Portugal, it is notable for its presence in South Africa, where it was introduced in the early 20th century as Tinta Barocca. It was believed to be another variety for decades, until recent genetic analyses confirmed its identity.
Agronomically, it is vigorous, buds early, and ripens quickly. It better balances acidity, freshness, and phenolic intensity when grown at altitude and with careful yield management.
In the glass, Tinta Barroca produces wines with a naturally high alcohol content, intense colour, but limited stability, and subtle aromas of ripe black fruit, flowers, and spices. The tannins are accessible, and the texture is smooth, making it ideal for blends. It is also surprising in well-crafted varietal wines.
At Quinta do Convento S. Pedro das Águias, Tinta Barroca shows its full potential in Ponte do Fumo Tinta Barroca, an elegant, fresh, and gastronomic wine with marked minerality and versatility at the table — from grilled meat to traditional Portuguese roast kid goat.
