Quinta do Convento. This is Kranemann Wine Estates' most important Douro DOC brand, a tribute to the Douro property that Christoph Kranemann fell in love with: the mythical Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias, in the heart of the Távora Valley. There, in 2018, this German wine enthusiast winemaking project dream came true just in time for harvest, one that would turn out to be something rather special. This harvest also saw the birth of Quinta do Convento Red 2018, now being sold commercially.
2018 was a year of excellence that resulted in the Kranemann brand declaring a Vintage Port. They also identified plots of red grape vines that due to their special characteristics (their altitude and north exposure) could further enhance the freshness and elegance that the Távora Valley terroir lends to its table wines. Quinta do Convento Tinto 2018 came to be: a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca from vineyards with an average age of 30 years.
"We tried essentially to safeguard the identity the high altitude Távora Valley terroir lends our wines and, in particular, the Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias. This wine reflects the typical fruit of the Douro, has rockrose notes, but maintains the acidity that gives it a very special freshness. It was aged for 9 months in second year barrels and the result is a very fresh and elegant wine, with fine tannins", explains winemaker, Diogo Lopes. "When we started the Kranemann project, we bottled our first Quinta do Convento from 2016, creating an excellent blend of wines that were already in the winery. I now believe that we are going a little further, in search of the emblematic freshness that characterises our terroir", Diogo Lopes concludes.
